THE CLEAN LEGGING EDIT

PACT

PureFit Legging

My search for a cleaner legging began with a fairly depressing assumption: I would have to lower my standards. Avoiding a largely synthetic second skin seemed to mean choosing between earnest looking cotton pants and leggings that surrendered at the knees before lunch.

PACT proved me wrong.

The PureFit Legging is 90% GOTS certified organic cotton and 10% elastane, and that ratio turns out to be a quietly brilliant equation. The cotton gives the fabric its soft, substantial, reassuringly non plastic feel. The elastane gives it just enough structure to hold its shape through Pilates, dog walks, and the many hours after both when I am still wearing leggings but no longer doing anything that could generously be called exercise.

They feel good the moment I put them on. Their real achievement is balance. They hold without squeezing, move without sagging, and feel polished without the slickness of a traditional performance fabric. The waistband stays put. The knees do not bag. The seat does not quietly give up as the day wears on.

PACT makes the PureFit in a Fair Trade Certified factory. They are not synthetic free, and I would rather say that plainly than perform some creative arithmetic around the 10% elastane. But here, the synthetic fiber feels purposeful rather than excessive. It is just enough to give a predominantly organic cotton legging the resilience to function beautifully in real life.

Perhaps the greatest surprise is the price. Of every cleaner legging I have tested, PACT is my favorite for feel, fit, and durability. It does not have the buttery, expensive hand feel of a $120 pair, and I don't think it's trying to. It is also the most affordable. In a category where better materials usually arrive with an increasingly ambitious price tag, the least expensive pair outperforming the rest feels almost suspiciously satisfying.

This is the pair I reach for first. It feels the best, has held up the best, and asks for the fewest compromises. I thought healthier leggings might require a little forgiveness.

These require none.
